Walmart and Microsoft recently announced that they are joining forces in the fight against Amazon.  The 5-year agreement will give Walmart more access to artificial intelligence and cloud systems owned by Microsoft.

The partnership is believed to be an attempt by known rivals of Amazon.com to better compete against the online retail giant.  Walmart and Microsoft engineers will join forces to move walmart.com and samsclub.com over to the Microsoft Azure cloud computing system.  The hope is to speed up online purchases and make it more convenient for buyers to choose Walmart’s e-commerce options.

Windows is also working on technology that could rid Walmart stores of checkout lines and cashiers.  The new technology aims to rival Amazon Go, Amazon’s automated grocery store. Amazon Go’s success in Seattle after its January launch, has already inspired the company to expand to more cities.

The agreement’s goal is to help Walmart combat Amazon’s recent retail initiative, potentially evening the playing field both online and in stores.
