Facebook’s New AI Video Chat
Last week Facebook introduced the Portal and the Portal Plus. These new devices are bringing AI to video chatting. They include a 12-megapixel camera, high definition video, and AI camera software that follows users as they move around the room.
The Portal will sell for around $200 and sports a 10-inch display. The Portal Plus comes in at around $350 and comes with a 15-inch rotatable display. Both devices are revolutionizing video chats, because they give users the freedom to move around a space while chatting instead of sitting still in one spot.
The Portal and Portal Plus mark Facebook’s first real venture into creating their own consumer hardware. Facebook could potentially get even more users for their app if the Portals are a success.
However, experts are concerned that Facebook’s recent security breach scandals will hurt the Portal’s sales. The Facebook breaches put millions of users at risk, leaving them wary of Facebook’s intentions.
To reassure consumers, Facebook has released that the Portal comes with an electronic kill switch for the front camera as well as a lens cover. Facebook has also ensured that the AI technology runs on the devices and not on Facebook’s servers.
