Amazon on the Big Screen
These days, it seems like Amazon is everywhere. They have grocery stores, bookstores, and they even deliver packages right to some Prime members’ cars.
Now it appears that Amazon is coming to the movies. They have recently put in their name, hoping to acquire Landmark Theatres. Landmark Theatres is the largest U.S. chain dedicated in independent films with 56 cinemas in 27 markets.
Amazon has not commented on what they plan to do with the theatres if they are able to purchase them. However many people believe that they they will use them as a way to both push their Amazon Studios content and control distribution.
Theatres provide Amazon a way to expand Amazon Studios and create more original content. All the while they could be playing their ads before the movie.
Theatres also provide valuable retail space. Most movie theatre money is made from the concessions. Amazon and its marketplace partners could use lobby space to create unique product experiences for customers. Viewers could end up leaving the theatre with a product they never expected to purchase.
So, would like to catch a flick at a new Amazon movie theatre?
