5G hits Houston this year
AT&T has announced that they are bringing 5G to Houston in 2018. They are also planning to upgrade LA and San Francisco to 5G in 2019.
This announcement added Houston to the list of 4 other big cities that will see 5G this year. The cities include New Orleans, San Antonio, Jacksonville, and Louisville.
AT&T has also released that their 5G network is advanced enough that they have placed a call with an early version of Qualcomm’s 5G radio chip. AT&T isn’t the only network trying to dominate 5G. Other providers such as Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint are all rushing to stand out amongst their competition.
Experts say that the perks to fully implemented 5G could be huge. It would allow for faster data speeds and shorter delays. This could enable the function of self-driving cars, augmented reality, and mobile gaming. It could also give birth to smart cities with smart traffic lights and smart public transportation.
However, we are unlikely to see these kinds of advancements anytime soon. The 2018 and 2019 implementations will only work with mobile network devices that send phone data with a WiFi connection. You will also have to live in the right area and purchase a new device in order to see a difference.
